We test our converter on text written by real people, not on examples we picked ourselves. This page shows the results, how we measure them, and where the converter still goes wrong.
Hinglish → Hindi
87.7% of words come out exactly right.
- Test text: the Hindi test part of Google’s Dakshina dataset: 5,000 sentences written in Hindi, each typed again in Roman letters by people, the way they would type Hinglish. About 81,000 Hindi words in all.
- We type the Roman version into AksharKosh and compare every word with the original Hindi.
- A word counts as right only when it is spelled exactly as in the original. We accept the dot under a letter (ज़ / ज) and ँ / ं as the same, and a few spellings that are both standard (गए / गये, आई / आयी, जाएंगे / जायेंगे, फोन / फ़ोन).
- Whole sentences: 23.6% come out with every word exactly right. In a 15-word sentence, one wrong word makes the whole sentence count as wrong, so this number is much lower than the word score.
We never add the test sentences or their words to our word lists. If we did, the score would go up without the converter getting better for you.
Hindi → Hinglish
Measured on 1,000 sentences from the Dakshina development part (16,875 Hindi words):
- 70.2% of words get exactly the Roman spelling the person wrote. Hinglish has no fixed spelling (mein / main / me), so a different spelling is often still fine.
- 93.4% of words we write in Roman letters turn back into the same Hindi word when you convert them again.
Where it still goes wrong
- Words that can be two things. “mein” can be में (in) or मैं (I); “mai” can be मैं or मई (May). The converter guesses from the words around it, and sometimes guesses wrong.
- Names and rare words. A name it has never seen is spelled from its sounds, which may not be how the person spells it.
- Very short spellings. “h” for है is guessed from context.
- English words in Hindi text. English words are converted too (meeting → मीटिंग). On a paid plan you can list your own English words under “My English words” and tick “Keep my English words in Latin” to leave them as typed.
When a word is a guess, the converter highlights it, and you can click it to pick another spelling. Paid plans also have a personal dictionary, so your own spellings always win.
