Count the matras (metre) in a line of Hindi poetry.
Type in Hindi script, or convert on the converter page first. Latin letters are ignored.
These are optional Hindi metre readings: some poets keep the short vowel light before म्ह/न्ह/ल्ह or प्र/क्र/ब्र.
How the count works
Short vowels and inherent अ count 1 (I / ।); long vowels count 2 (S / ऽ). Anusvara, visarga, a following conjunct, or a final halant makes a short syllable heavy. Chandrabindu does not. Final inherent अ counts as written: राम is S I = 3. This is a written metre guide; pronunciation may differ.
